Turn the encaustic painting iron upside down and you make a mini-hotplate. This set of encaustic card doodles is a spontaneous series of enjoyable creative experiences. Sometimes the process is as fine as the product. In fact sometimes the process is far more valuable than the product. Enjoyment, relaxation, fun, all these are at hand when the 'play' of artistic curiosity is lived and activity with the molten wax medium of the encaustic arts is an ideal way to engage with these aspects of yourself. |
Fantasy Castle Cards 1 Fantasy Castle Cards is a short hobby art series exploring simple and small images in encaustic art wax block colours, created using the painting iron as the main tool. Quick to do , stimulating to the imagination and as always, easy to change and rework during the creative process. Of course, this is just a glimpse of what might be developed with practise and imagination - enjoy these first magical steps with Michael Bossom. |
Fantasy Castle Cards 2 Second in the short Fantasy Castle Card series, this features 2 images being created for fun hobby art cards. Learn about turning a chaotic abstract background into a fantasy scene. Next watch the opportunities for images flow through before a decision is made to stop and develop the waxen work into that final story. |
Fantasy Castle Cards 3 Third in the Fantasy Castle Cards series of 4 videos, this one is focused on scrying. You may wonder what scrying means - well it is the activity of seeing, one might almost say divining through the act of gazing into something - in this case the wax colours. The scry backgrounds offer a basis for the imagination to develop imagery that enlivens the whole into a cohesive image. Great for fantasy scenes! |
Fantasy Castle Cards 4 The fourth and final short video in the Fantasy Castle Cards series, The Angels & Castles A5 card image develops from a fairly random beginning. After abstraction it is once again the 'scrying' approach that evolves the environment which expands into the visionary artwork. Is luck something real? Uploaded as a 2013 Christmas wish card |

Doyley printing Filigree paper doyleys are usually used to decorate cakes being served. But their lovely patterns can be utilised in a simple encaustic wax printing process to give quick & intricate results. Great for card making, but good for artistic work too. Watch approaches involved in the making of 11 pieces for a display board. |
Stylus Wire Brush Take a look at using the Stylus wire brush head in this little video which shows the creation of an image, loosely resting in landscape, but more simplified and abstracted. It was done as a relaxation, but also to notice how the brush head of the Stylus can be used . So, hopefully you will get some insight into the fine metal wired Stylus Brush Head. 'Landescapes' seemed like a suitable title as it all unfolded. Hope you enjoy it & thanks for watching. |

Foxgloves flourish, blooming in June & July, their beautiful red violet magenta pink florets climbing up those tall elegant stems. This easy to watch 20 minute video witnesses an A2 sized foxglove landscape in encaustic wax coming to life (594mm x 420mm). Painted onto card base using the encaustic art wax blocks (non-resinous wax), Michael Bossom guides the colours with heated tools, to find a final image of remembered experiences. |

The Grass Fence 5 Grass Fence 5 looks at some different types of encaustic wax approaches. Resin Wax is an encaustic medium of beeswax and damar resin melted together. Beeswax and citrus solvent paste is a cold application medium applied in layers and after a few hours of drying it is fixed by torch flame fusing. Be aware of good ventilation and fire safety! |

A collection of encaustic images used to illustrate a portion of a song from Long long ago. |
A set of encaustic images combined with music made by a similar approach - allowing the creative forces to unfold in the actual moments of working rather than preconceiving what should happen before starting. |
