The concept of how to form a landscape image using the iron & wax
Creating very basic landscape images with the four iron effects is a simple process Smoothing is just like light ironing - the horizon & hills
iron wax on..
Lifting creates a fascinating suction effect - foliages
lift iron up..
The edge makes thin or thick lines - grasses
add edge lines..
...and the point is good for detail - the bird
iron point bird
These picture sets show how the images were developed...
Skies are applied with a smoothing action from the iron Single band of light colour Lots of white and a streak of darker blue Start with more bands of colour A full blown coloured sky
Differing shaped horizon lines offer flat , hilly or mountainous forms Flat horizon made by one iron stroke Rounded hills come from the iron's curved edge High hills or soft mountains High sharp mountain peaks
foreground details ' furnish ' the terrain Simple 3 band landscape Strong dabbing for trees, fine for ground cover. Open highlands landscape. A Wild Rocky / Alpine place
The images are completed - similar methods yet very differing results Use the scriber to add a path - enhances depth 'Grasses' from the top corner look like a tree Water is easiest to portray if parallel to the top/bottom of card Still a series of effect bands, but a bit more sophisticated
